Isaac Pierce

Isaac Pierce

Isaac Pierce’s journey to Virginia may have been influenced by an event that took place in March 1760. (2) The Boston Evening Post recounts the story of what was considered the worst fire the area had ever experienced. The fire started in a home and due to the high winds, it raged and consumed large buildings, stores and dwelling houses, even igniting powder and causing a huge explosion. Listed among the dozens of individuals whose homes were lost was “Mr Isaac Pierce and distillhouse.” Young Isaac would have been about thirteen when his family likely lost their home, and his father his distillery. As a working-class family, young Isaac would likely have been seeking an apprenticeship and preparing for his own career. Did his family’s and father’s devastating loss influence his career in block making or his move to Virginia?
